Why be evaluated?

Our 2026-2027 Canes Lake Erie teams evaluate players similar to a job interview. At ages 13 and 14U players are at a development crossroads and its very important athletes are ready for exposure so they don't get exposed. Our organization will always stress DEVELOPMENT before exposure. At an evaluation you can expect.

  • Canes directors to evaluate athletes and make a recommendation where to play. Not all players are 1% but we recommend to each family a path that is best for their situation.
  • Directors will evaluate: attitude, culture, work ethic, speed, hitting, fielding and pitching.
  • In some cases, players will be invited to a team practice type setting to see how they interact with other athletes for a follow-up evaluation. We do this to make sure athletes are finding the correct team for their athlete and family.
  • Once selected to a team, the family will be sent a formal invite to the team and a $140 non-refundable deposit.
  • The family will also be given options to join the Erie Strike Zone and access to instructors for summer training sessions.

Why join Canes Lake Erie?

Canes Lake Erie allows 13 and 14U athletes to enter into the Canes Baseball network which brings unparalleled opportunities for our players to reach high-level exposure including college and MLB scouting. Canes players are part of the largest scouting network in the US with over 200 players annually committing to college programs.

Canes Lake Erie teams focus on 2 things:

  • Preparing 13U and 14U athletes to be the best version of themself on and off the field. These are critical ages for players to develop proper fundamentals, strength, speed and culture to make themselves recruitable for college and MLB scouts. Our year round training program provides consistent coaching and mentorship.
  • Providing training resources and opportunities for all regional/national Canes athletes in our area through memberships to the Erie Strike Zone Academy.

13 and 14U are critical ages for athletes to develop the 1% values through consistent, high level training. Through our partnership with Gannon and Canes PA we focus on preparing athletes for higher levels of the game as they head into their high school years. This process of developing character, values and skills is critical to the success of the athletes as they enter very important ages of performing in front of scouts.

At ages 15U+, players will be guided to our regional Canes PA and national Canes teams.

Training Program

Why join Canes Lake Erie?

Our Canes training program is year round and is 70% practice and 30% games. We focus on training skill development (practice/academy sessions) and game development (games/tournaments). 1% athletes are expected to be doing homework and working to be the best of their craft at all times. This is what seperates the 1% from their peers while building good human beings in a positive and professional environment.

Our seasons are divided into 3 phases.

  1. Offseason - September through February. During this time, athletes work on individual skills, strength and team training in our academy sessions at the Erie Strike Zone. Each athlete will train roughly hours per week in these sessions and also have a team practice once a week. Teams will have a fall ball tournament and possibly host winter games/double headers.
  2. Preseason/Spring Training (March-April) - Teams start full time team training and indoor spring training.
  3. Tournament season - (May to August) Teams challenge themselves against difficult competition to see the higher speeds of the sport. Teams practice both outdoors and at the Erie Strike Zone Academy.

Note: We welcome multi-sport athletes but Canes teams are designed for athletes focused on baseball as their primary sport. Multi-sport athletes must attend academy sessions during the offseason and attend all in-season practices; otherwise playing time will be impacted.

What to bring?

  • Mitt/glove
  • Bat
  • Helmet
  • Sneakers/turf shoes
  • Proper baseball attire
  • Positive attitude

We treat evaluations like a job interview and expect athletes to arrive prepared. Players who show up in full uniform, with belts buckled, hats on correctly, jerseys tucked in, and a focused mindset demonstrate to us that they are serious about their opportunity to be in the 1%! This is the first step in "controlling the controllables" and accepting a high-level of commitment,

Where do we train?

NW PA weather is rough and it is important our athletes can train year round indoors and have access to outdoor training as weather allows.

Our teams will train indoors at the Erie Strike Zone Academy www.eriestrikezone.com The Strike Zone is a 24,000 sq ft indoor baseball training facility with 8 batting cages, a full weight room and multiple open turf training areas. This training environment is designed for athletes determined to play at the collegiate level.

We also work with local universities and facilities for larger indoor training. These are limited for facility availability and we do our best to schedule events or practices to get full field reps as much as possible. In summer months teams will train at multiple facilities and alongside the Erie Jr SeaWolves teams at their facility in West Erie located close to the Strike Zone.

Other Questions

Other Questions

Other Questions

  • What is the age cutoff? Age cutoff is May 1st. For example 13U players turn 14 after May 1, 2027. If the player turns 14 before May 1, 2027 then they are not eligible for 13U.
  • What is "travel commitment" for Canes teams? Your athlete will be expected to travel at these ages to highly-competitive tournaments in Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and Columbus area. Teams may decide to travel to a Ripken or PG tournament in the south as well.
  • What happens if my player does not make the Canes? Your athlete will be guided to Jr SeaWolves teams of his age if appropriate. These teams work towards the 7% and provide similar training to the Canes teams, but will provide athletes that need development a pathway where they can have meaningful game reps against equal competition before they play in a showcase event.
  • How can I offset my registration costs? We offer fundraising opportunities and team banner sponsors that will allow parents to work towards a full credit for their athletes registration fees.
